The first Seaton Pirate Festival took place on Saturday, May 23, with entertainment including storytelling, family activities, a talk on pirates in the English Channel, sea shanties and a song-writing workshop.
Seaton Tramways offered a pirate-themed experience, while The Captain's Beard and Bonsai Pirates performed at The Gateway Theatre in the evening.
Kevin Rye, from Seaton, said: “About a year ago I was inspired by other successful Pirate Festivals, such as the one in Brixham and felt that we should have one here.
“The support both from local businesses, community organisations and the Seaton Chamber has been fantastic.
“Huge thanks are also due to the dedicated team of volunteers that has made it possible.”
One of the highlights was the Pirate Parade, where festival-goers dressed in pirate finery gathered at Axe Yacht Club before parading along the Esplanade as onlookers applauded.
Another was the Pirate parkrun, where regular parkrunner Joyce West celebrated her 91st birthday in the company of pirates.
Pubs and cafes also joined in with pirate-inspired food and drink menus, including Mermaid's Mushroom soup, Shipwreck Nachos and Parrot's Paradise mocktails.
Seaton shops created themed displays for the festival.
Liz Shepherd, of Amber Home of Colour on Marine Place, said: “This event has been great fun and excellent for local businesses, bringing both pirates and landlubbers into the town.”
Several visitors were regulars at other pirate festivals, including Richard and Avril Winter, who attend five or six each year in character as Barnancle Bill and Angelica Teach.
Richard said: “Seaton's first Pirate Festival has gone really well. I'm impressed by how many were in the Parade and by the range of activities on offer.”
Ellie Walker, social media manager and music co-ordinator for the festival, said: “I was absolutely thrilled by the turnout.
“It's been great to see people of all ages dressed up, looking amazing and enjoying the wonderful activities and community spirit.
“The weather has been fantastic and it's been a very memorable day.”
